What is sociology if not the systematic attempt to come to an understanding of modern society? (Wagner 1994). Sociology and modernity are closely intertwined, but it has also been argued that sociology is actually a product of modernity. Which came first, the egg or the chicken? It can be proved to some extent that sociology is a product of modernity and modern society demands as the first schools of sociology opened within the modern world as the discipline became recognised because of rational thought. However I do believe some aspects of sociology occurred before the enlightenment there was just no person or technology there to conduct studies, after all sociology requires scientific thought itself.
