La Nuestra Familia/Prison Gang

The La Nuestra Familia (NF) originated in Soledad, now San Quentin, prison in California in the mid-1960's and was formed to protect younger, rural, Mexican-American inmates from other inmates. The NF sold protection to these inmates who were fearful of the Mexican Mafia (EME). Former EME members who opposed EME tactics of preying on their own started the gang. …tactics such as the traditional gang unit, reactive investigations of gang crimes and proactive investigation of gangs will help combat gang problems and is a way to remove the threat posed by these gangs as quickly as possible. The NF has been around since the mid-sixties and will continue to operate. We as Law enforcement have to devise new ways to deal not only with local and national gangs but international gangs and terror groups.
