Throughout the history of America being discovered and settled, the Indians have had much difficulty sustaining the changes. Some Indian tribes were able to get along with the Americans, while other Indian tribes were not. This is also true for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Overall, the Lewis and Clark expedition was able to maintain good relations with the Indians for the most part. Lewis and Clark knew that they needed the Indians "knowledge, guidance, assistance, transportation, and food" (Calloway, 226) in order to get them across the land to the Pacific and back. Sadly, the Indians never did get their freedom and land to keep.
