Since its first use in an Australian court in 1989, the technology has moved from the controversial to the mainstream. The techniques available such as southern blotting, the Sanger method, and gel electrophoresis are very accurate, fairly quick, and relatively inexpensive (Trudinger 1). Due to these techniques DNA can be analyzed and compared to other samples thus allowing forensic scientists to identify individuals.
