Lyme Disease
The Bacteria that causes Lyme disease is called Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the bite of ticks. Not all types of ticks carries the bacteria that causes the disease, In the Eastern United States the deer tick is mainly responsible, but in the Western United States the black-legged tick is the dominate carrier. Once infected with the disease it affects the skin, heart, nerves and joints. The diagnosis of Lyme disease is based on
completion of successful treatment. Although the Lyme disease has some very serious affects it is very rare that the disease becomes fatal. The best way to prevent against it is to avoid being bitten by ticks. A few ways to do so are to use insect repellant, avoid infested areas, and wear light colored clothes to spot out ticks. By following these precautions the risk of being bitten by an infected tick is greatly decreased.
