1869 Chicago Water Tower In May of 1969, during the year of its Centennial Anniversary, the Chicago Water Tower was selected by the American Water Works Association to be the first American Water Landmark in the nation. The tower was completed in 1869 and survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The architect was William W. Boyington and the tower is constructed of Joliet limestone blocks quarried in Illinois. …Completed in January 1999 the statue, dubbed Our Lady of the Millennium, was finished just in time to receive a personal blessing from Pope John Paul II during his visit to St. Louis last winter. After being displayed at St. Jerome's Parish in Bridgeport, Our Lady was moved, via a flatbed truck, to St. Germaine Catholic Church in Oak Lawn, where her recent stay cause a quite a stir among both media and the local parishioners.
