My Worst Job

I have worked in several unfulfilling jobs in the years since I graduated from high school. A six month stint on the eleven to seven shift at the local Seven-Eleven was an exercise in receiving abusive, demeaning comments from drunken patrons, and working as a roofer was physically uncomfortable. Sometimes I still seem to feel my skin burning from the boiling pitch we used. Yet, these were but minor annoyances compared to the only job …

…By this time, I was having horrific nightmares, and found myself waking up in the middle of the night, dreading the ride into work. When at last my transfer did come through, I felt a brief pang at leaving my customers behind, but as I stood on the porch of 1602 Louden Street and watched two pit-bulls kill a stray dog, I realized that I must have been insane to stay as long as I did.
