Nato and the Cold war

The latter half of the twentieth century has been dominated by the Cold War and the actions and events surrounding it. During this period different alliances and treaties were formed and many of these were institutionalized. One such alliance was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In 1999 Navy aircraft took part in the NATO air campaign against Serbia. Navy planes operated from the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Adriatic Sea and from a land base in Aviano, Italy. The Navy also continued an extensive deployment schedule that had Navy ships operating around the world.
