Northern and Southern Colonies
North Colonies vs. South Colonies Colonial America was hardly the unified whole that may be pictured. The colonies were settled at different times, and the surrounding area directly affected the lifestyle of the colonist. The three regions of colonies, New England, Chesapeake, and the South all had very distinct cultures and societies. Through historical documents and decisions, the differences, as well as similarities can very easily be seen. Religion and the Puritan code ruled all
man, and even if found guilty, the white punishment was far less severe. After comparing the two areas in question, the differences between them were abundantly clear. The two court systems tried entirely different crimes and rested on very opposite judicial bases. The North followed religion, whereas the Middle colonies based the courts on economic gain, mainly keeping the rich white landowners happy. The comparison goes to show that religion and economics do not mix.
