Passage To India

After reading Paige's journal, I definitely agree with her thoughts on the significance of the characters and their relationships with one another. The plot has been slow through this first section of our novel study, yet I believe that she found the significance behind all the characters. …the landscaping of India. Overall I find that Paige and I are on the same track but the only question I have is: Why do they keep referring to Orientals? The only reasoning I can come up with is they are just meaning "different." (Whether different is interpreted "weird" or just different outlooks but I didn't see the connection to Asians?) If they are referring to Asians, then I do not understand why this is.
