The religious oppression and political establishments, the restriction of civil liberties, the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment, and the taxation that Parliament imposed all added up and caused a great deal of tension between the colonies and their homeland of England. Furthermore, it could have been expected, with consideration of these causes, that the colonists would not accept England in authority over them for long.
