In many ways, the Blues was the soundtrack for black life under white Southern oppression. Economic conditions in the south were horrible from the civil war well into the 1940's. Daily life was a harsh economic struggle, the blues emerged as a reaction to the worsening of southern economy. Rock 'N' Roll and its black origins, its words, style and implications threatened white parental society. Through the Beats and Rock 'N' Roll, the rebellion against suburbia was started. Both of these cultural phenomenon punched a gaping hole in 50's style conformity. Rock 'N' Roll was labeled subversive.
