In 495 B.C. there was a child born about a mile outside of Athens. This child was to be named Sophocles. He was a boy whose father was a wealthy merchant. Sophocles also effected a modification in the spirit and significance of a tragedy. Although problems of religion and morality still provided the themes, the nature of humans and their problems and struggles became the fundamental interest of Greek tragedy.
