Surrealism, n. Surrealism was started in 1924 in France by Andre Breton and was officially declared to be over in 1941. Thus, Surrealism existed between World War I and II and this was a major influence to the movement. Surrealism was fuelled by the Dada movement,
unreal contexts, Surrealist painters achieved their aim of creating shock and confusion of the real and dream world. Each Surrealist artist viewed their subject matter differently and portrayed it in different manners, showing the versatility of the human mind. Surrealism has had a major influence on further modern art and although Surrealists defied the boundaries of art and the manner in which art should be portrayed, they have managed to propel art into new dimensions.
