If a nation-wide public referendum was to be held today, on how far Swahili culture has contributed to our socio-economic progress, I bet that the majority would vote in the negative out of sheer prejudice, but purely out of a realistic assessment of the role of this culture and the impact it has had on our society as far as societal change and transformation are concerned. …me conclude by saying that culture is not static, but a dynamic concept. With changes in human development becoming unpreventable, these negative traits in our culture will eventually disappear under the pressure of social change and transformation. This will come even along the coast where there is strong resistance to change. The process is likely to be gradual and incremental, which has for ages been a typical characteristic of human progress all over the world.
