Following the Civil War minorities especially African-Americans felt great hope for immediate equality. When the thirteenth amendment which abolished slavery was ratified many minorities felt that they would be given equal rights. This wasn't going to be the case for a long time to come. Although their candidate didn't win, it put the Democrats and Republicans in a very tight spot. This is because the People's Party was actually something to be reckoned with. Especially in the depression of the 1890s the populists gained ground while Democrats looked bad for letting the economy sink so low.
