ECCLESIASTES i.4: Claims that the earth will never be destroyed. (see note to Deut.iv.40) ii.26: This verse was probably added later on to soften the overly pessimistic and cynical tone. iii.20: No heaven, hell, or resurrection. iv.3: Living is a curse. xii.9-14: This epilogue, written in the third person, was perhaps the result of two hands trying to soften the tone of the book. …lx.12: Thou shalt ... suck the breast of kings. Besides being a ridiculous curse, how is it biologically possible? LXIII: This chapter inspired the song The Battle Hymn of the Republic. It's simply a celebration of a prospective massacre of a group of people, namely the Edomites who were encroaching into Judah. lxiii.17: Yahweh is blamed for causing the people to sin. lxvi.17: This chapter refers to the mouse-cult of Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis.
