The Enlightenment Era: The Cause and Effect of Science on Religion

The Enlightenment was a term used to denote a turn away from the theologically centered thought inherited from the "dark ages" towards a broader, more rational self-understanding (Europe and the Enlightenment 2). …In other words, these intellectuals substituted a good society of men on Earth for the kingdom of God in heaven. Clearly, the Enlightenment Era was an age where the intellectual thoughts of the people in Europe were at an all time high. These intellecuals' views had a great effect on their surroundings, especially religion. The thoughts of these scientific philosophers had attacked religion so hard, that the attacks had almost banished the religion of Christianity.
