In 1997, the Boeing Company took a strategic gamble, buying the McDonnell Douglas Company in $14 billion stock deal. As a result of the merger, Boeing had become the world's largest manufacturer of the military aircraft, NASA's largest supplier, and the Pentagon's second largest contractors. Nevertheless, despite the growth in its defense and space businesses, Boeing still derived most of its revenues from selling jetliners.
