The Inevitable World War I World War I was inevitable. There was no other way to deal with the current situation, than war. Firstly, imperialism was occurring, which was the expanding of each country to gain more land, and therefore, power. …When Germany built up its army, the other strong powers had to expand theirs as well to keep the balance of power. Everyone thought World War I would be an easy, quick war, so they went into war without as much thought. What really happened was a long, four year, disastrous war. So, when the Black Hand assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, for gaining land that was thought to be Serbian, the war began.
