In 1629 he was persuaded to move to Massachusetts and serve as the governor of the colony. In 1630 he led a fleet of eleven ships to the shores of New England and chose a site on a hilly peninsula in Massachusetts Bay, which the Puritans named Boston. He was elected governor sixteen times during the twenty-four years that he lived there.
