The U.S. Constitution: Survival In Our Day
In creating the U.S. Constitution, the founding fathers knew that they had to create a document that addressed the problems of the past. Their experiences in the colonies and with the English monarchy influenced much of what became the Constitution of the United States. They wanted a document with rules and structure that would avoid the pitfall of governments past. Yet, due to the uncertainties of the future, the constitution that they were writing
current ideas and social causes my not survive the approval process if not ratified by Congress and state legislatures. Some recent issues such as equal rights, flag burning, and the balanced budget amendments all show that the system for amending the Constitution is still relevant. In summation, the fact that the Constitution provides stability, while being adaptable, shows that it is still an effective document for governing our nation while ensuring our freedom and rights.
