Life insurance and other epidemiological studies have suggested that mortality rates begin to increase substantially at weights 20% greater than desirable, this corresponds to a BMI of 27 kg/m2. Individuals with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater clearly increased mortality. All of these indices are only measures of overweight.
