Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert. At the age of sixteen, he started work at the Hague gallery of the French art dealers, Goupil & Co.. His uncle was a partner in this firm and his younger brother Theo later worked there too. After his dismissal from the firm, he taught briefly in England before training as an evangelist. …eo died six months later. Theo's widow Johanna returned to Holland with the bulk of Vincent's work. She did much to gain the recognition that her brother-in-law deserved especially after the correspondence between the two brothers was published in 1914. Did she have such lofty ideals? More likely, poor Johanna was more concerned about her and her young son's survival -- but in the process she brought the work of Vincent van Gogh to worldwide attention.
