The nuclear war causes the evacuation and the crash of the plane and boys to start the novel off. Near the middle, the war is still in progress, shown by the plane flight and the fall of the dead pilot. At the end of the novel, the war is still on, shown by the warship and the naval officer rescuing the boys.
