An interpretation of "The lesson" by Maya Angelou

…But, on the other hand, Sylvia proves that you don't need it to be happy. She is happy, carefree, and full of pride, no matter where she came from. She continues to feel that white people are crazy and frivolous, wasting so much money on unessential items. She will also continue to rebuff Miss Moore's lessons because she does not believe that she needs anything more in life than swimming or going to the movies.
