Septimus is a man who is darker in personality and is in touch with his internal personality as opposed to Clarissa a woman who is very social as she struggles to figure out what she truly desires and is narrow-minded. Septimus can be analyzed as part of Clarissa's personality that is absorbed by fear and broken down by society. He is everything Clarissa lacks and Clarissa is everything Septimus lacks.
