Explore how Victorian writers use character and setting to create suspense Ghost stories were very popular in 18th and 19th century Britain, when horror classics such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula were first written. …the writer builds up suspense by portraying the actor's reaction to the setting as the story goes on is very effective. It is always a very good length for a short story, and gives just enough away at the end to satisfy the reader, whilst at the same time allowing them to draw their own conclusions. Overall, I enjoyed reading all three stories and thought each of them built up suspense effectively in different ways.
