…t. The advent of gangsters and racketeering in the 1920s and '30s was another. These two major elements brought about a new look on movies and an end to Pollyanna attitudes, a mood reflected in noir's dark look. Technical developments were also important. Faster film stock (to film those dark scenes) and more mobile camera dollies made it possible for the camera to capture scenes that would have been difficult or impossible earlier.
