Harriet Tubman: African American's Savior and Heroine

Background Harriet Tubman was born c. 1820 to her parents Benjamin and Harriet Ross who named her Araminta Ross (internet "Harriet Tubman"). She was born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland along with her ten siblings. As a girl, Harriet was "hired out" by her master to become a nanny for an infant. Although Harriet wasn't recognized for her overwhelming achievements while she was alive, a WWII vessel was named after her and in 1978 a U.S. Postal Service stamp was created in her honour (internet Harriet Tubman-Underground"). Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913 with full military honours and the inscription "Servant of God, Well Done" (internet "America's") on her gravestone.
