Heart of darkness essay Marlow, hero in Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness, bravely sets out into the depths of the Congo looking for truth and adventure. He starts out with a strong set of moral beliefs concerning the greatness of truth and the evil of lies. However, things turn out to be not so black and white for Marlow, and he ends his journey telling one of the greatest lies of all. Marlow shows
exist, and tells Kurtz's widow that Kurtz was a noble man whose last words were her name. Conrad tells us that truth is ugly, something we don't want to face. It is in our human nature not to. Even Marlow, who strives for truth, wants to live in truth, fails because the truth became too ugly to share. Conrad still believes that the truth is important and such is the message from creating this book.
