How far do you share Hawethorne's view of The Scarlet Letter as an "allegorical romance?"

The study of literature is based on interpretation and analysis. With this in mind, I will seek to show my agreement that the Scarlet Letter is an allegorical romance, through my interpretation of some of the author's literary techniques. The Scarlet Letter demonstrates Hawethorne's gift for probing guilt and anxiety within a human soul. He demonstrates the conflict of strict moral code of Puritan society and the more humane enlightened attitude of his time. His underlying themes are brought out in the construction of the plot, characters setting and history of the nineteenth century Puritan society.
