Jean-Francois Millet: 19th Century French Realism

The title of my art focused upon in this paper is The Angelus, by Jean-Francois Millet. Millet painted this work of art in 1951. I chose this painting because of Millet's fascination with the peasant life. Most of the art before the French realism focused on portraying the wealthy aristocrats and biblical imagery and stories, but now we are beginning to see everyday people and even peasants being portrayed in art work. …credit to mankind. As a painter he was not without his faults somewhat clumsy in technique, not pleasing in color, while emotion, with him, does not always keep clear of declamation. These faults are most palpable in his most famous works, such as The Sower and The Angelus (New Advent, 2003). Millet was not very popular and his works were received with unenthusiastic and even hostile responses. Millet gained his popularity and notoriety after his death.
