Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the greatest and recognized writers of American fiction, was born on July 4, 1804 In Salem, Massachusetts, and the historic home of the Salem witch trials. Due to a severe stroke, he died on May 19, 1864 while visiting a friend from college.
