Peru's Coca Reduction Efforts We have reviewed the 1999 Peru coca cultivation survey, and the results of Peru's coca reduction efforts are excellent. Peru achieved a net reduction of 24 percent in total coca cultivation compared to 1998, from 51,000 hectares down to 38,700 hectares. This lowers the total amount of potential cocaine production to 175 metric tons - a 27 percent decrease from a potential yield of 240 metric tons in 1998. The Department of State appreciates the efforts of the Government of
its efforts on the drug front. The Banzer Administration took ownership of the drug production problem in Bolivia in 1997 and promised to rid Bolivia of illegal drug production by 2002. Bolivia is well on the way to reaching this goal on schedule.
