The main character, Emma Bovary, starts the film on a farm, very bored and looking for a new life. She obtains this goal by marrying a widower doctor, who has a practice in the closest city. …wipe out almost all of his wealth. Claude Chabrol does a wonderful job of making Madame Bovary seem very real. The crushing drama that is contained in her life is portrayed on the screen with great emotion. The most notable scenes consist only of Madame Bovary expressing, very emotionally, her depression at her current situation. I think Chabrol makes a powerful statement about how permanent marriage is and how carefully one should choose a spouse.
