He lives with his father, mother, brother, two sisters, and two aunts. Sarty's father is a very bitter and mean man who burns barns of other people and then uproots his family to a new place. his father is doing is wrong. Yet, he loves his father and is always wishing for a change. He struggles within himself to decide what to do about the situation. At the end of the story he decides to tell on his father and live without him. He cannot live another day knowing that what his father is doing to people is wrong. He knows that by telling, he must leave and never look back.
