The question which is raised by the author definitely is "Should children be whipped?" Metaphors: Steep concrete step, sank into a chair etc. Transfer epithet: a red angry pucker. <Tab/>All in all, the author managed to create the atmosphere of a constant life dilemma when people have to choose either one course or another, but both are undesirable (to whip the children, to ignore their childish behaviour). There is no answer for me personally, but Katherine Mansfield made me to think over it.
