The Character of Heathcliff in the novel, Wuthering Heights
Throughout the novel, Wuthering Heights, the reader is exposed to the themes of revenge, social class, and love through the character of Heathcliff. Throughout the novel, Heathcliff is described as an inhuman monster-who demonstrates great acts of evil. From a literary perspective, he is more the embodiment of the Byronic hero, a man of stormy emotions. He is the main character and demonstrates the themes of revenge, breaking the social class structure, and the idea of a passionate, spiritual love. The character of Heathcliff is an interesting one, as the reader often has difficulty understanding his cruelity. Although Heathcliff is also portrayed as a successful individual, he is also the antagonist because of how he hates as deeply as he loves, therefore, he is despised as much as he is loved.
