The Fate of Oedipus the King Oedipus the King, a play by Sophocles, is the story of Laius, a murdered king. Oedipus, husband of Jocasta (Liaus's widow) is the current king of Thebes. The city is suffering under a terrible plague and Oedipus is challenged with finding a way to get this problem solved. He wished to put an end to a deadly plague, and that plague would only be stopped when said murderer is killed, or driven from the land. Thusly, when it is revealed that Oedipus himself murdered Laius, we are left with nothing more than to pity and accept that he was nothing more than a victim of fate.
