G-d created Adam and placed him in a utopian situation, where he could live freely. It was a perfect life except for one restriction. …By definition, G-d's creates with conscious planning and deliberation. G-d must have figured (if not known) that they were going to eat from the tree. Like a compassionate parent, G-d showed mercy to his creations and lowered their sentences from death to life without this utopia. This showed G-d's compassionate side to his proverbial children. The author of genesis clearly wanted to state from the beginning of the bible, that G-d is compassionate to humanity.
