The sow's final breaths, however, were taken in what Golding describes as a paradise, foreshadowing that though Jack will manage to kill the innocent, he will not be able to corrupt them. Jack and Roger's later back and fourth rhythm of slitting the pig demonstrates that they are also destroying the innocence within themselves, and that their thirst for power will ultimately corrupt it.
