To what extent does hamlet retain his sanity after claiming to put an antic disposition on?

In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet claims, "to put an antic disposition on." He maintains this false sense of madness throughout the play, though his sanity is put into question by other characters. He was loved by his people and respected, as Mary and Charles Lamb point out in Tales from Shakespeare; "For Hamlet was a loving and a gentle prince, and greatly beloved for his many noble and princelike qualities; and if he had lived, would no doubt have proved a most royal and complete king to Denmark."
