You've never heard a person say, "Gandhi was a monster," or "Mother Theresa was a monster." You could hear someone jokingly call a tall or large person a monster just because of his or her size. …were so frightened of the monster was because, let's face it, people during that time period weren't the brightest of all people. They were entertained and frightened VERY easily. I'm sure that seeing a gigantic man with his head and different body parts stitched together would have been absolutely terrifying. So in a sense a person can make themselves a monster with their personality, but only society can make them a monster by their looks.
