Why was Caesar assassinated?

Throughout history, a number of different historians have attempted to discern why it was that Julius Caesar, the sole dictator of Rome, and "champion of the people", was callously murdered by his contemporaries in 'Pompey's theatre' on the 'Ides of March' 44B.C. It was such a dramatic, calculated and ruthless murder that it has inspired many celebrated artistic impressions and a famous Shakespearean play. It would appear that through his arrogance, assertiveness, popularity and unequalled ability to lead Rome, he inadvertently encouraged his colleagues and "those he trusted the most" (such as his much-loved protegé Brutus) to devise a plan to rid Rome of his ultimate power. They, optimistically, saw this as a necessary action in order to restore the supremacy of The Republic.
